Grandma Rumpke’s Hot Slaw

This is Grandma Rumpke’s famous hot slaw.


  • 1 head Cabbage, chopped
  • 1 large Onion, chopped
  • 2 stalks Celery, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¾ pound Bacon, chopped into small pieces
  • Sugar to taste (about ½ cup)
  • +/- 1 cup Cider vinegar


  • Combine cabbage, onion, celery, salt and pepper. In a large skillet, fry the bacon until crisp. Add cider vinegar and sugar, simmer for about 2 minutes. Pour over cabbage mixture and stir well.
